San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) February 28, 2012

With up to 88 percent of individuals failing to keep their New Years resolutions, now is the time for those who resolved to reduce debt in 2012 to stay motivated, according to Kevin Gallegos, vice president of Phoenix operations for Freedom Debt Relief (FDR).

Getting out of debt is one of the most time-honored resolutions each year, said Gallegos. Its a resolution that makes sense, as the average American household that carries credit card debt owes nearly $ 16,000. Come February, though, sticking to resolutions to find debt relief can become hard.

Gallegos offered nine tips to help people stick to their 2012 get-out-of-debt resolutions.

1.    Determine your baseline. You cant get where youre going unless you know where youre starting from. When it comes to finances and debt, the starting point is a list of everything you owe, including mortgage, credit card debts, auto loans, student loans, personal loans, payday loans, medical bills, and any overdue amounts for utilities, insurance, etc. Next, create a list of monthly income and must-pay expenses. These expenses include shelter, basic food, utilities, transportation necessary for your job, basic clothing, etc. The difference of income minus necessary expenses equals your discretionary income. From this amount, you must pay all other expenses entertainment, eating out, shopping, travel, cable TV, phone service as well as debt.

2.    Determine debt-paying priorities. Necessities such as food, shelter and utilities are most important. A vehicle may be necessary for transportation to a job. After making those payments, determine how to allocate any additional money toward your get-out-of-debt resolution. Pay payday loans first, and then credit cards. During this time, do not add to your debt. Use cash, checks, debit or electronic withdrawal from your checking account. Take credit cards out of your wallet and delete credit card information from online shopping sites. Think twice before closing credit card accounts, as this could lower your credit score by reducing the amount of available credit.

3.    Get organized. Beside each bill you listed in Step No. 1, note payment amount, interest rate and due date. Write down how much you will pay each month to each creditor. Pay at least the minimum amount on each bill. To eliminate debt, pay any extra funds you have available to one debt until it is paid off. Then transfer the extra, as well as what you were paying on that debt, to the next bill until it is repaid, and so on. Some people like to pay off the smallest balances first, to get the fastest sense of accomplishment. Others like to pay the debt with the highest interest rate first, in order to minimize interest fees. Choose one method and stay consistent.

4.    Get serious about expenses. It may be possible to make $ 100 a month or more available by carefully scrutinizing expenses, said Gallegos. That may include steps like bringing lunch from home, giving up cigarettes or alcohol, bicycling or carpooling to work, or giving up subscriptions to movie services, music services, magazines or paid websites. Store brands and coupons can help. Also make sure to avoid paying for expedited shipping or convenience fees. Keep notes on what you save, and apply that amount to your debt. While monthly progress may seem small, remember to think long-term; your efforts will pay off.

5.    Track progress. Use a spreadsheet or pencil and paper to track how much debt you have paid. Note the month and starting total balance, and update it every month. It is also a good idea to get your free credit report once a year at http://www.annualcreditreport.com.

6.    Pay on time. On-time payments will eliminate late fees and penalty interest rates that make debt mount faster, noted Gallegos. They also are the most important element of good credit, which will help down the road in qualifying for lower interest rates on a house or car loan. Good credit can also help with securing an apartment rental and even a job.

7.    Know when to get help. If you cannot afford your debt payments, consider getting professional help. Many sources and types of help are available. These might include credit counseling and debt management plans, debt consolidation or debt settlement (also known as credit advocacy). For those in serious debt situations for whom debt management or debt relief services cannot help, bankruptcy may be the right solution.

8.    Create an emergency fund. Put some portion of your income into savings for emergencies. Most financial advisors suggest savings should cover three to six months of necessary living expenses. But even a few hundred dollars to start can prevent you from going into debt when you face a medical bill, auto repair or other unexpected expense. If you can save as little as $ 25 per month, you would have $ 300 at the end of the year.

9.    Save. Work toward saving at least 10 percent of all income to eventually have three to six months of necessary living expense. But even a small amount can prevent you from going into debt when you face a medical bill, auto repair or other unexpected expense.

Even if things have gotten off to a rocky start, its not too late to make 2012 the year to get out of debt, said Gallegos. Achieving any New Years resolution requires patience and persistence, but it will be worth it to create a better future.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

TeachWithMovies.com announces the publication of its Learning Guide for Into the Wild which provides curriculum materials on both Sean Penns movie and the book by John Krakauer. Into the Wild tells the true story of Chris McCandless, a troubled young man who tried to find himself through adventures in the remaining wilderness areas of the American West. His journeys ended when he starved to death in an abandoned bus in the Alaskan forest. When McCandless died, just several miles and one raging river separated him from civilization and the help he needed to survive.

The 2010 Common Core Curriculum Standards call for an increased focus on teaching students to read nonfiction texts. TeachWithMovies.com is responding to that call by developing a set of Learning Guides for films based on nonfiction books that will interest todays students. The curriculum materials for lesson plans for Into the Wild is the first TWM effort in this regard. More curriculum materials for nonfiction movie/book combinations will be announced soon, including Learning Guides for Maos Last Dancer and 127 Days.

Into the Wild engages students. In the experience of Chris McCandless kids will find parallels to their own struggles growing up. This empathy will energize class discussions. It will also lead students to do their best on assignments that require the writing skills that are at the core of the ELA curriculum. One goal of the lesson is to interest students in reading the book. James Frieden, co-founder of TeachWithMovies.com.

The Learning Guide to Into the Wild helps teachers develop a nonfiction lesson plan for high school students that provides context for McCandless story. It alludes to an iconic passage from “Child Roland’s Pilgrimage” by Lord Byron. In addition, students will be required to read Jack Londons short story, To Build a Fire, a tale about another tragic journey in the Alaskan wilderness. The class will be asked to compare the two stories. The Guide also suggests introducing students to the mysterious death of Everett Ruess, an event examined in Krakauers book. Ruess was a young man who traveled extensively in the desert Southwest in the early 1930s. He usually traveled alone and then, in 1934, Ruess disappeared in the wilds of Southern Utah.

The Learning Guide also contains discussion questions, activities and writing assignments that will lead students to explore the ideas presented in the book and the film.

One focus of the TWM Learning Guides to nonfiction book/movie combinations is to encourage students to read all or a portion of the books by using the movie as an introduction. As an alternative, teachers can use the Learning Guides to create lesson plans focusing exclusively on the book. TWM Learning Guides provide background information, discussion questions, activities, assignments, and several types of generic movie worksheets.

TeachWithMovies.com is the premier site on the Internet showing teachers how to use feature films and other video resources to enhance the classroom experience. The site offers thousands of pages of lesson plans and curriculum materials on more than 350 feature films. The price for access to all TWM curriculum materials is $ 11.99 per year per teacher. Discounts are available for bulk purchases.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 20, 2012

That statuesque golden boy has been wooing audiences since 1929. But the Oscar winners have more to share than entertainment or even a night of watching the red carpet. Marley Majcher, founder of the nationally acclaimed event planning and catering company The Party Goddess! and author of But Are You Making Any Money?, says the Oscars provide a wealth of business and life lessons.

Majcher shares her top 10 business and life lessons from previous Oscar winners and this years Oscar hopefuls.

1. Jerry Maguire

Five Nominations. One Win.

So cataclysmic was Jerrys decision to chuck it all and start his own company that his name is now a business term. Its called the Jerry Maguire Moment, the instant when someone stops following their bank account and starts following their heart.

Make the decision to choose integrity like Jerry, says Majcher, and then, should the opportunity arise, go change the world starting with your own.

2. Working Girl

Six Nominations. One Win.

Tess McGill had big hair and big dreams. The hair got shorter. The dreams grew. How? Majcher notes she had a very chic, very streamlined idea.

“Dress the part you want, act the part you want – not the part you have. Then go after it,” explains Majcher. Spoiler alert: It works.

3. Rocky

10 nominations. Three wins.

A good cardio workout is one lesson of this timeless 1976 champion tale. Another is never backing down. That means going against impossible odds, doubters, pessimists, and obstacles.

Rocky taught us all how to fight. Not just with our fists, but with our fervor, says Majcher. In life or business, we all have at least one passionate fight in us.

4. It Happened One Night

Five Nominations. Five Wins.

This romantic classic taught there is more than one way to hitchhike. It also taught priorities. The awkward yet intimate relationship between spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews and hungry reporter Clark Gable teaches that happiness is not synonymous with money or fame.

“Both, eventually, gave up what they perceived they wanted for what they truly desired. Risking it all either in business or life – might be everything it takes,” adds Majcher.

5. Forrest Gump

13 Nominations. Six Wins.

From fighting a war to running across country, Forrest Gump was a constantly shifting body of motion. What made him a success was his focus. During a pivotal point in Forrests life, a soldier gave him some advice about ping pong, Now the secret to this game is, no matter what happens, never, never take your eye off the ball. It turns out, thats the secret to life, too.

6. The Kings Speech

12 Nominations. Four Wins.

He stammered. King George VI, known by his family as Berty, had one main duty to perform as King: speak for his people. Problem was, he couldnt. He believed it was impossible. Lionel Logue, however, showed Berty that his limitations were only perceived.

We all face impossible tasks in our business reaching a certain income, increasing our production, streamlining our processes, being that success we all dream about, says Majcher. But Berty showed us something monumental, that the impossible rarely is impossible. Difficult? Yes. Impossible? No.

7. Moneyball

2012 Best Picture Nominee

The Oakland As didnt stand a chance. Too poor. Too underrated. Tooother bad things. So General Manager Billy Beane, with the assistance of computer analyst Peter Brand, rewrote the playbook. If they stood no chance of winning with the accepted formula, then they had to rewrite the formula. It meant looking at the problem from a different angle and being creative with their resources. No more following the beaten path. They beat out a path for themselves. And the resultspeaks for itself.

8. The Help

2012 Best Picture Nominee

They cooked and cleaned and raised children. Thankless jobs. Yet maids Aibileen Clark and Minny Jackson gave it everything they had. The children loved them, the homes were spotless, and the fried chicken was never burned.

What you are doing matters less than how you do it, says Majcher. You may not yet be living your dream. But wherever you are, whatever you are doing, give it everything youve got. Its not only the recipe for happiness, its the path to success.

9. The Dark Knight

Eight Nominations. Two Wins

Batman had a choice: save himself or save his city. Thats the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.

“In business, you are confronted with many choices. Usually two, just like Batman. Right will rarely be easy. But it will always be right,” explains Majcher.

10. The Sound of Music

10 Nominations. Five Wins.

The Sound of Music taught people to think about their favorite things, that doe is a female deer, to never sit in a chair without checking it for acorns first. It also taught people that standing on their principles will take unbounded courage. And maybe good hiking shoes.

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 15, 2012

Everyone has likely all wondered at one point or another what it would be like to walk through a waterfall but in the middle of New York City? Doing that well, sort of is possible at a recently renovated oasis behind 1221 Avenue of the Americas, owned and managed by The Rockefeller Group. With the help of a crystal clear acrylic tube from Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. (RPT), pedestrians can walk through the tunnel that bisects a giant waterfall and remain dry to take a shortcut to the next block .

The updated courtyard features a park, a large decorative waterfall, and a seamless acrylic tunnel that lets people cross from 48th to 49th Streets midway through the block. The plaza and passageway were originally built with the building in 1971, but the tunnel at that time was made out of curved metal framing and glass inserts. Over time, parts of the tunnel began to wear out from use from the constant stream of water running over it, leaks appeared around worn gaskets, and the metal framing had sagged to the point where it was nearly irreparable. Thats when the decision was made to scrap the existing tunnel and put in a new R-Cast® acrylic tunnel.

Building the tunnel out of acrylic offered many advantages over glass, explained Matt Houlihan, Vice President of Sales & Marketing at RPT. The flexibility, formability, and structural strength of acrylic allowed us to custom design and fabricate this tunnel to be totally seamless – no need for clunky metal supports to block the view and its nearly 17 times stronger than glass while only half the weight.

The minimal amount of framework gives the tunnel a sense of being more open and lets visitors really feel as though theyre walking through the waterfall, while the UV stabilized acrylic ensures a crystal clear tunnel for decades ahead. The new tunnel is just over 12 feet wide, six feet tall and 14 feet long. The acrylic only needed to be half an inch thick for this application.

The waterfall and tunnel are architectural features for people simply to enjoy, said Bill Stoddard, the head engineer for the project. The tube is seamless and looks great. Tourists are out there every day taking pictures in the tube.

This urban refuge is a bit of a hidden gem thats ideal for relaxing, eating lunch, sitting down to talk or crossing the street via the tunnel. In fact, the charm that this plaza offers with its unique pedestrian tunnel has earned it appearances in several movies throughout the years.

About Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc.

Reynolds Polymer Technology, Inc. has completed more than 1,600 projects in 53 countries in their nearly 30 years in business. RPT is known as the leading manufacturer, fabricator, designer, and installer of R-Cast® acrylic and resin sheets. In fact, RPT is the only acrylic aquarium panel manufacturer in the U.S. Their products have been used extensively in the architectural, signage, aquarium, water-retaining, and scientific industries worldwide, including major projects in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Locked up for a decade on drugs charges and immersed in both philosophical tomes and modern pulp thrillers, Langohr penned Lock Up Diaries Vol 2 of A California Pelican Bay Prison Story. Langohr strives in his writing “to show that by incarcerating low level drug criminals, we are breeding an addiction into an affliction much harder to escape.”

“Lock Up Diaries” is a depiction of life inside of prison and a look at the political landscape between races who are segregated by cell after being released from the Pelican Bay SHU in California. The amazing details of prison life – code words that prisoners use, explanations of how they communicate from cell to cell – really make readers feel as though they have entered a different world or like they are watching a movie about prison life. The story shows how race riots that can kill prisoners can be started for very small and seemingly unimportant reasons, and how violence permeates every aspect of prison life.

Langohr writes prisoners to inspire them to turn what they’ve been through into a blessing through writing and art. See his YouTube video for more.

Additional books by Glenn Langohr on Amazon Kindle include: Roll Call Volume 1, Upon Release Volume 2, A California Pelican Bay Prison Story-Race Riot Volume 1, and Volume 3, Gladiator.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) February 01, 2012

Xtranormal, the revolutionary online approach to movie-making, is pleased to announce that the growing trend of using Xtranormal videos for education is already creating a lasting impression in classrooms across the country. Cari Parr, a special education teacher at Barfield Elementary School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, uses Xtranormal videos to capture her students attention, making the learning process fun and engaging. Caris movies introduce various social skills to her third through fifth grade students.

I was at an in-service [workshop for teachers] this school year and we were working on hooks, attention-getters teachers can use before a lesson to grab students attention, recalls Cari. I was sitting there trying to think of something different, a technology my students would enjoy, and it just came to me I thought if I made an Xtranormal movie with characters that could literally speak to the students and address our specific subject matter, it would make it more personal. When I first showed it to them, they couldnt believe that a robot knew what was happening at school. It certainly got their attention.

Sophia Kim, Xtranormals CEO, comments, We couldnt be more thrilled that teachers like Cari are using Xtranormal in simple yet powerful ways to a make a difference in the lives of students. We expanded our focus into the realm of education because we saw the need for interactive tools in the classroom, and we are amazed at how creatively teachers are using Xtranormal to integrate technology into their curriculums. Were constantly learning and incorporating feedback from our users to continuously evolve and create innovative ways to use Xtranormal in the classroom and our everyday lives.

Parr, whos been teaching special needs students since 1997, reported that, while shes used a variety of digital media tools with her students, shes never used anything as dynamic as Xtranormal, which allows her to change content frequently and customize it to her class and their needs.

My kids dont always feel comfortable talking to adults or even real people sometimes. I knew if I found something they could latch on to, it might make a difference. Theyre so drawn to the Xtranormal characters Ive created, Parr explains. Im putting good dialogue into their brains that will help them outside the classroom. My students remembered every word the robot characters said! It usually takes three to four days of repetition to get an idea to stick with my students. With Xtranormal videos it only takes one to two days!
